Frameless structural rooflights in Cambridge: what is involved?
Our frameless structural rooflights service in Cambridge covers minimal glass rooflights with no visible frame from inside. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.
Barn conversions and timber-framed homes across the East often call for conservation rooflights or bespoke glass. In Cambridge, as anywhere, frameless structural rooflights are the usual choice for rooms where you want sky without a visible frame.
Cambridge is around 48 km from Peterborough, and we survey and fit throughout that part of Cambridgeshire, including the CB1 district.
Choices for your Cambridge project
- Heated glass on some ranges
- Solar-control coatings
- Triple glazing
- Butt-jointed runs for long openings
- Shadow-gap or plastered reveal
- Double or triple glazed structural units
- Clean modern detail for architect-led schemes
What to check first
- Large panes need lifting gear and access planning
- Tolerances are tight — the opening must be built square and to size
Planning, building control and Cambridge
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Frameless structural rooflights in Cambridge: questions
How is it lifted onto the roof?
Larger panes go up with a vacuum lifter, a hoist or a crane. We plan access at survey.
Can it open?
Some frameless designs include a sliding or hinged opening element, but most are fixed. Pair with an opening unit if you need ventilation.
Will I see the edge of the glass?
From inside, the reveal is finished up to the glass so the edge is hidden. From outside you will see the glass and its edge seal.
Can you work alongside my builder in Cambridge?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
Do I need to be at home for the survey in Cambridge?
Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
