Ridge & pitched glass roofs for Oxford: the essentials
For Oxford homes and buildings we offer ridge & pitched glass roofs: dual-pitch glazed roofs for side returns, links and long extensions. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Larger gardens in much of the South East mean deeper rear extensions, and deeper rooms need light from above rather than only from the doors. In Oxford, as anywhere, ridge & pitched glass roofs are the usual choice for terraced-house side returns that would otherwise be dark.
We cover all of Oxford and the OX1 district, and nearby Abingdon and Didcot.
Options we can specify in Oxford
- Integrated gutters and box gutters
- Opening vents and electric actuators
- Dual-pitch or mono-pitch
- Fixed or retractable shading
- Solar-control, self-cleaning or tinted glass
- Works with exposed brick and period detail
- Forms the roof as well as the window
What to check first
- Large glass roofs affect the energy calculation for the extension
- Overheating is a real risk on south-facing glass roofs
Planning and building rules for Oxford
Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Building Regulations Approved Document L sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new or replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured in the horizontal plane; roof windows need 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B energy rating. Replacing a rooflight or roof window can be self-certified by an installer registered with an authorised competent person scheme; otherwise building control approval is needed.

Common questions
Can it be partly solid?
Yes — part-glazed, part-insulated roofs balance light and heat.
Is a glass roof too hot for a kitchen?
Without care, it can be. Solar-control glass, an opening vent at the top and a blind make a south-facing glass roof comfortable.
Do I need a party wall agreement?
If the work affects a party wall or boundary, the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 may apply in England and Wales. We flag this at survey so you can serve notice in time.
Is the survey in Oxford free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
Can you work alongside my builder in Oxford?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
