Roof lanterns in Hackney: what is involved?
For Hackney homes and buildings we offer roof lanterns: hipped glass lanterns that lift the ceiling of orangeries and extensions. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Party walls are a fact of life in London terraces, and rooflights close to a shared wall need detailing that keeps the neighbour's side dry too. In Hackney, as anywhere, roof lanterns are the usual choice for orangeries, kitchen-diners and single-storey extensions.
Hackney sits about 3 km from Bow and 3 km from Stratford, and we cover the whole E8 postcode district and the roads in between.

Consents for roof lanterns in Hackney
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.

Questions about roof lanterns in Hackney
Aluminium or uPVC?
Aluminium gives slimmer bars and a longer life; uPVC costs less. We fit both.
Do roof lanterns get hot?
They can in summer if clear glass is used on a south-facing roof. Solar-control glass and an opening vent make a big difference.
Do they leak?
Modern lanterns are sealed systems. Leaks usually trace back to the kerb or roof membrane detail, which we form and check ourselves.
Is the survey in Hackney free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
Do you fit roof lanterns in Hackney?
Yes. We survey and fit roof lanterns in Hackney and across Greater London. Send your postcode and we will offer a survey date when we reply.
