Roof lanterns for Harpenden: the essentials
Our roof lanterns service in Harpenden covers hipped glass lanterns that lift the ceiling of orangeries and extensions. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.
Larger gardens in much of the South East mean deeper rear extensions, and deeper rooms need light from above rather than only from the doors. Roof lanterns suit rooms that need height as well as light.
We work across Hertfordshire, including Harpenden, and in neighbouring towns such as St Albans and Luton. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.
What you can choose
- Internal and external colours
- Rectangular, square or bespoke sizes
- Aluminium or uPVC systems
- LED lighting in the plaster box
- Opening vents with electric control
- Adds visual height to a single-storey room
- Slim aluminium bars, more glass
Things we check at survey
- Plaster-box depth affects how the lantern looks from below
- Larger lanterns may need a steel or timber ring beam
Consents for roof lanterns in Harpenden
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. Replacing a rooflight or roof window can be self-certified by an installer registered with an authorised competent person scheme; otherwise building control approval is needed.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Questions about roof lanterns in Harpenden
Can a lantern go on an existing extension?
Yes, if the flat roof structure can be opened up and trimmed. We check joists and the roof build-up at survey.
Do they leak?
Modern lanterns are sealed systems. Leaks usually trace back to the kerb or roof membrane detail, which we form and check ourselves.
Aluminium or uPVC?
Aluminium gives slimmer bars and a longer life; uPVC costs less. We fit both.
Do I need to be at home for the survey in Harpenden?
Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
Do you fit roof lanterns in Harpenden?
Yes. We survey and fit roof lanterns in Harpenden and across Hertfordshire. Send your postcode and we will offer a survey date when we reply.
