How we approach pitched roof windows in March
Thinking about pitched roof windows in March? The short answer: centre-pivot and top-hung skylights for tiled and slate roofs. The longer answer depends on your roof, which is why we survey before we price.
Flat, open landscape in much of the East means roofs take the wind, so upstand and seal details matter more than the brand of glass. Think of pitched roof windows for lofts, attic rooms, landings and vaulted ceilings.
March is around 23 km from Peterborough, and we survey and fit throughout that part of Cambridgeshire, including the PE15 district.

Do you need permission in March?
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Building Regulations Approved Document L sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new or replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured in the horizontal plane; roof windows need 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B energy rating. Replacing a rooflight or roof window can be self-certified by an installer registered with an authorised competent person scheme; otherwise building control approval is needed.
Read the planning permission guide before you commit to a design.

Pitched roof windows in March: questions
Centre-pivot or top-hung?
Centre-pivot windows are easy to clean and suit most rooms. Top-hung windows open out from the top for an unobstructed view and suit lower roof pitches near eye level.
Can a roof window be fitted from inside?
In most cases, yes — only the tiles around the opening are lifted, and much of the work is done from inside the loft.
Can roof windows be electric?
Yes — electric and solar-powered models open by remote and many include rain sensors.
Can you work alongside my builder in March?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
How do I book a survey in March?
Send your postcode and, if you can, a photo of the roof and the room. We offer a survey date when we reply.
