Skylight installation in Watford: what is involved?
For Watford homes and buildings we offer skylight installation: survey, supply and fit — new openings, extensions and fit-only work. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Period cottages and conservation-area streets are common in the South East, so slim conservation rooflights are often the right choice. Think of skylight installation for builders' projects and retrofits into finished roofs.
We cover all of Watford and the WD17 district, and nearby Bushey and Rickmansworth.

Do you need permission in Watford?
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Questions about skylight installation in Watford
Is the survey free?
Yes, for new installations. Repair visits are charged.
Who handles building control?
We tell you which route applies — building control approval, a building warrant in Scotland, or in England and Wales self-certification by a registered competent person — and supply the product data.
Do I need a structural engineer?
For new openings that cut joists or rafters, a structural check is sensible and building control may ask for calculations.
Will I need planning permission in Watford?
Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line.
How do I book a survey in Watford?
Send your postcode and, if you can, a photo of the roof and the room. We offer a survey date when we reply.
