Skylight installation in Bicester: what is involved?
Our skylight installation service in Bicester covers survey, supply and fit — new openings, extensions and fit-only work. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.
Larger gardens in much of the South East mean deeper rear extensions, and deeper rooms need light from above rather than only from the doors. In Bicester, as anywhere, skylight installation is the usual choice for new extensions, new openings and fit-only jobs.
Neighbouring towns include Oxford (18 km) and Banbury (22 km). We offer a survey date when we reply to your enquiry.

Consents for skylight installation in Bicester
Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Common questions
Do I need a structural engineer?
For new openings that cut joists or rafters, a structural check is sensible and building control may ask for calculations.
How long does installation take?
Fitting into a prepared upstand takes about a day. A new opening in an existing roof, including making good, often takes two to three days.
Who handles building control?
We tell you which route applies — building control approval, a building warrant in Scotland, or in England and Wales self-certification by a registered competent person — and supply the product data.
Will I need planning permission in Bicester?
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge.
Is the survey in Bicester free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
