How we approach skylight replacement in Cardiff
Our skylight replacement service in Cardiff covers replacing tired domes and failed glass with a modern rooflight. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.
Many Welsh homes have older single-storey rear extensions where a glass rooflight brightens a dark kitchen. Typical uses for skylight replacement include yellowed domes, misted glass and leaking roof windows.
Cardiff is the main town we list in South Glamorgan; we also cover nearby Penarth and Dinas Powys.
What you can choose
- Misted glass unit replacement only
- Like-for-like size replacement
- Dome to flat glass upgrade
- Roof window replacement in pitched roofs
- Fixed to electric opening
- Clearer view and more light
- Often reuses the existing opening
Before you order: points to check
- Enlarging the opening changes the structure and may need approval
- Old glass and domes are disposed of responsibly
Planning and building rules for Cardiff
Welsh householder permitted development (Class C) allows rooflights that project no more than 15 cm and sit no higher than the existing roof — but not in conservation areas, National Parks, AONBs or World Heritage Sites. Listed buildings need listed building consent from the council, and flats have no householder permitted development rights.
Approved Document L in Wales (2022 edition) sets 2.2 W/m²K for rooflights, measured horizontally, and 1.4 W/m²K or Band B for roof windows in existing homes. A revised Welsh Approved Document L takes effect on 4 March 2027; rooflights in new dwellings stay at 2.2 W/m²K.
Read the planning permission guide before you commit to a design.
