Sliding rooflights for Dinas Powys: the essentials
Thinking about sliding rooflights in Dinas Powys? The short answer: box rooflights whose glass lid slides back for walk-out roof access. The longer answer depends on your roof, which is why we survey before we price.
Many Welsh homes have older single-storey rear extensions where a glass rooflight brightens a dark kitchen. Sliding rooflights suit staircases that rise to a roof terrace.
We work across South Glamorgan, including Dinas Powys, and in neighbouring towns such as Penarth and Cardiff. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.
Choices for your Dinas Powys project
- Double or triple glazing
- Box (glazed sides) or flat sliding lid
- Rain sensor
- Electric drive with safety edge
- Anthracite, black or RAL frames
- Electric operation with safety stops
- Lockable from inside
What to check first
- Needs space on the roof for the lid to slide clear
- Electric units need a dedicated supply and commissioning
Planning, building control and Dinas Powys
Planning rules in Wales are tighter than in England for rooflights: Class C rights do not apply in conservation areas, National Parks or AONBs, so a rooflight there needs planning permission. Listed buildings need listed building consent from the council, and flats have no householder permitted development rights.
Welsh Building Regulations expect new or replacement rooflights to reach 2.2 W/m²K and roof windows 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B rating. A revised Welsh Approved Document L takes effect on 4 March 2027; rooflights in new dwellings stay at 2.2 W/m²K.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Sliding rooflights in Dinas Powys: questions
How heavy is it?
Box sliders weigh hundreds of kilograms, so delivery may need a crane or lifting gear, and the structure must be checked.
Is it lockable?
Yes. Units lock from inside and the drive holds the lid closed.
Is a sliding rooflight better than an access hatch?
For daily use, usually yes — you walk out under open sky instead of climbing through a hinged hatch. A hatch costs less and suits occasional access.
Can you work alongside my builder in Dinas Powys?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
How do I book a survey in Dinas Powys?
Send your postcode and, if you can, a photo of the roof and the room. We offer a survey date when we reply.
