Walk-on rooflights for Cardiff: the essentials
For Cardiff homes and buildings we offer walk-on rooflights: structural glass you can stand on, set flush into terraces and floors. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Welsh planning rules exclude rooflights from permitted development in conservation areas and National Parks, so we check the designation before quoting. Think of walk-on rooflights for roof terraces, balconies and floors above basements.
Cardiff is the main town we list in South Glamorgan; we also cover nearby Penarth and Dinas Powys.
Choices for your Cardiff project
- Double or triple glazed with a structural top pane
- Heated or self-cleaning glass on some ranges
- Fixed or with privacy interlayer
- Internal floor panels between storeys
- Integrated in paving pedestals or a timber deck
- Flush with paving or decking — no trip edge
- Pairs with a sliding box unit for terrace access
Before you order: points to check
- Glass on roofs people can reach must not be fragile — check the non-fragility rating
- Structural support and the design load must be confirmed by the manufacturer or an engineer
Do you need permission in Cardiff?
Planning rules in Wales are tighter than in England for rooflights: Class C rights do not apply in conservation areas, National Parks or AONBs, so a rooflight there needs planning permission. Listed buildings need listed building consent from the council, and flats have no householder permitted development rights.
Approved Document L in Wales (2022 edition) sets 2.2 W/m²K for rooflights, measured horizontally, and 1.4 W/m²K or Band B for roof windows in existing homes. A revised Welsh Approved Document L takes effect on 4 March 2027; rooflights in new dwellings stay at 2.2 W/m²K.
