How we approach glass links & glass box roofs in Risca
Glass links & glass box roofs in Risca means frameless glass links joining old and new buildings. We cover the NP11 district and the rest of Gwent, with a survey before any price is fixed.
Chapels, barns and farm buildings converted across Wales often need bespoke or conservation-style glass. In Risca, as anywhere, glass links & glass box roofs are the usual choice for listed and period buildings where the old wall should stay visible.
We work across Gwent, including Risca, and in neighbouring towns such as Newport, Gwent and Cwmbran. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.

Planning, building control and Risca
In Wales a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development if it stands no more than 15 cm proud of the roof, except on protected land such as conservation areas and National Parks, where permission is needed. A side-facing rooflight within 10.5 m of the boundary must be obscure-glazed, and non-opening unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Approved Document L in Wales (2022 edition) sets 2.2 W/m²K for rooflights, measured horizontally, and 1.4 W/m²K or Band B for roof windows in existing homes. Wales also has its own overheating rules (Part O) for new homes, in force since November 2022.
Read the planning permission guide before you commit to a design.

More we do in Risca
Glass links & glass box roofs in Risca: questions
Who designs it?
Your architect, or we produce a survey-based design that the glass manufacturer engineers.
How long does a link take?
Design and manufacture are the long part. Fitting is often two to five days.
Is structural glass safe?
Structural glass is laminated so it stays in place if a ply breaks. The manufacturer designs it for the loads involved.
Can you work alongside my builder in Risca?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
Will I need planning permission in Risca?
Planning rules in Wales are tighter than in England for rooflights: Class C rights do not apply in conservation areas, National Parks or AONBs, so a rooflight there needs planning permission.
