Glass links & glass box roofs in Cardiff: what is involved?
Our glass links & glass box roofs service in Cardiff covers frameless glass links joining old and new buildings. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.
Welsh planning rules exclude rooflights from permitted development in conservation areas and National Parks, so we check the designation before quoting. Think of glass links & glass box roofs for joining a period house to a new extension or annexe.
Cardiff is the main town we list in South Glamorgan; we also cover nearby Penarth and Dinas Powys.

Planning, building control and Cardiff
In Wales a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development if it stands no more than 15 cm proud of the roof, except on protected land such as conservation areas and National Parks, where permission is needed. A side-facing rooflight within 10.5 m of the boundary must be obscure-glazed, and non-opening unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Welsh Building Regulations expect new or replacement rooflights to reach 2.2 W/m²K and roof windows 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B rating. Wales also has its own overheating rules (Part O) for new homes, in force since November 2022.
Read the planning permission guide before you commit to a design.

Glass links & glass box roofs in Cardiff: questions
Do glass links need planning permission?
Often, yes — and listed building consent if either building is listed. We can provide drawings and product data for your application.
How is the glass joined to the old wall?
Usually by a slim channel or flashing set into the masonry, sealed and weathered so the old wall can move without cracking the glass seal.
Can a glass link be warm enough to use all year?
With insulated glass units, solar control and good detailing, yes — though it will always be brighter and more exposed to temperature swings than a solid room.
Can you work alongside my builder in Cardiff?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
Do I need to be at home for the survey in Cardiff?
Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
