Hinged roof access rooflights for Cardigan: the essentials
Our hinged roof access rooflights service in Cardigan covers hinged glazed hatches over a stair or ladder for roof terrace access. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.
Slate roofs, stone cottages and terraced valleys are typical across Wales, and slim rooflights that sit low in the slates suit them best. Think of hinged roof access rooflights for reaching a roof terrace, plant area or flat roof from a stair or ladder.
We work across Dyfed, including Cardigan, and in neighbouring towns such as Carmarthen and Haverfordwest. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.
What you can choose
- Hinge side to suit the stair
- Rain sensor on electric versions
- Frame colour options
- Manual gas-strut or electric opening
- Double or triple glazing
- Suits stairs, ladders and plant access
- Lockable from inside
Before you order: points to check
- The lid must open clear of parapets and balustrades
- Electric versions need a supply and a safety check
Do you need permission in Cardigan?
Welsh householder permitted development (Class C) allows rooflights that project no more than 15 cm and sit no higher than the existing roof — but not in conservation areas, National Parks, AONBs or World Heritage Sites. A side-facing rooflight within 10.5 m of the boundary must be obscure-glazed, and non-opening unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Approved Document L in Wales (2022 edition) sets 2.2 W/m²K for rooflights, measured horizontally, and 1.4 W/m²K or Band B for roof windows in existing homes. A revised Welsh Approved Document L takes effect on 4 March 2027; rooflights in new dwellings stay at 2.2 W/m²K.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Hinged roof access rooflights in Cardigan: questions
Electric or manual?
Gas-strut hatches are simple and reliable. Electric hatches suit heavier lids, wider openings and anyone who would struggle to push a lid up.
Can it replace an old loft hatch?
Where there is a flat roof above, yes. On a pitched roof, an access roof window is the equivalent.
Can it be opened from the roof?
Many units have an external handle or key for opening from outside. If you need that, tell us at survey.
Can you work alongside my builder in Cardigan?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
Do I need to be at home for the survey in Cardigan?
Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
