Roof lanterns for Peterborough: the essentials
For Peterborough homes and buildings we offer roof lanterns: hipped glass lanterns that lift the ceiling of orangeries and extensions. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Flat, open landscape in much of the East means roofs take the wind, so upstand and seal details matter more than the brand of glass. Roof lanterns suit orangeries, kitchen-diners and single-storey extensions.
We cover all of Peterborough and the PE1 district, and nearby Stamford and Oundle.
Specification options
- Aluminium or uPVC systems

Consents for roof lanterns in Peterborough
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Under Approved Document L, a rooflight added to an English home must achieve at least 2.2 W/m²K (horizontal plane), and a roof window 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. The Future Homes and Buildings Standards, published in March 2026, apply from 24 March 2027 and keep the 2.2 W/m²K limit for rooflights.
Read the planning permission guide before you commit to a design.

How the job runs
- Tell us what you have. Send the PE1 postcode, a rough size and a couple of photos.
- Survey. We measure the opening, check the roof build-up and agree the options.
- Fixed quote. Product, work and price in writing — nothing is ordered until you agree.
- Fit and make good. We fit, seal, test and finish the reveal, then hand over the paperwork.

Common questions
Roof lantern or flat rooflight?
A lantern adds height and sky from all sides; a flat rooflight is lower-profile and cleaner from outside. Our guide compares them in detail.
How big can a lantern be?
Aluminium systems go to around three by six metres in standard ranges; larger sizes are made to order.
Do they leak?
Modern lanterns are sealed systems. Leaks usually trace back to the kerb or roof membrane detail, which we form and check ourselves.
Is the survey in Peterborough free?
Yes for new installations. Repair visits are charged, and we tell you the price before we book.
Do I need to be at home for the survey in Peterborough?
Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
