Roof lanterns for Monmouth: the essentials
For Monmouth homes and buildings we offer roof lanterns: hipped glass lanterns that lift the ceiling of orangeries and extensions. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Many Welsh homes have older single-storey rear extensions where a glass rooflight brightens a dark kitchen. In Monmouth, as anywhere, roof lanterns are the usual choice for orangeries, kitchen-diners and single-storey extensions.
We work across Gwent, including Monmouth, and in neighbouring towns such as Abergavenny and Pontypool. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.
Specification options
- LED lighting in the plaster box
- Opening vents with electric control
- Solar-control or self-cleaning glass

Before you order: points to check
- Larger lanterns may need a steel or timber ring beam

Planning and building rules for Monmouth
In Wales a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development if it stands no more than 15 cm proud of the roof, except on protected land such as conservation areas and National Parks, where permission is needed. A side-facing rooflight within 10.5 m of the boundary must be obscure-glazed, and non-opening unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
In Wales the limiting values are 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight and 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window in an existing house. Wales also has its own overheating rules (Part O) for new homes, in force since November 2022.
Read the planning permission guide before you commit to a design.

Common questions
How big can a lantern be?
Aluminium systems go to around three by six metres in standard ranges; larger sizes are made to order.
Aluminium or uPVC?
Aluminium gives slimmer bars and a longer life; uPVC costs less. We fit both.
Do they leak?
Modern lanterns are sealed systems. Leaks usually trace back to the kerb or roof membrane detail, which we form and check ourselves.
Do I need to be at home for the survey in Monmouth?
Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
Will I need planning permission in Monmouth?
Planning rules in Wales are tighter than in England for rooflights: Class C rights do not apply in conservation areas, National Parks or AONBs, so a rooflight there needs planning permission.
