Roof lanterns for Rugby: the essentials
Our roof lanterns service in Rugby covers hipped glass lanterns that lift the ceiling of orangeries and extensions. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.
Industrial and commercial units around Midlands towns often still have their original rooflight sheets, which are due for replacement. Typical uses for roof lanterns include rooms that need height as well as light.
Jobs in Rugby are planned around access: whether the roof can be reached from the garden, whether a hoist or crane is needed, and where we can park. We check this when we measure.
Choices for your Rugby project
- Internal and external colours
- Solar-control or self-cleaning glass

Things we check at survey
- Some designs project above the roof enough to affect planning on certain houses
- Plaster-box depth affects how the lantern looks from below
Do you need permission in Rugby?
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. A rooflight on a side-facing slope must be obscure-glazed, and fixed shut unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Building Regulations Approved Document L sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new or replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured in the horizontal plane; roof windows need 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B energy rating. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.
See our building regulations guide for U-values, glazing limits and self-certification.

Questions about roof lanterns in Rugby
Do they leak?
Modern lanterns are sealed systems. Leaks usually trace back to the kerb or roof membrane detail, which we form and check ourselves.
Roof lantern or flat rooflight?
A lantern adds height and sky from all sides; a flat rooflight is lower-profile and cleaner from outside. Our guide compares them in detail.
How big can a lantern be?
Aluminium systems go to around three by six metres in standard ranges; larger sizes are made to order.
Do I need to be at home for the survey in Rugby?
Yes — someone needs to let us into the room below and, where possible, show us how the roof is reached.
How do I book a survey in Rugby?
Send your postcode and, if you can, a photo of the roof and the room. We offer a survey date when we reply.
