Pitched roof windows in Machynlleth: what is involved?
Our pitched roof windows service in Machynlleth covers centre-pivot and top-hung skylights for tiled and slate roofs. Every job starts with a survey of the opening, the roof covering and the room below, and a fixed written price.
Welsh planning rules exclude rooflights from permitted development in conservation areas and National Parks, so we check the designation before quoting. In Machynlleth, as anywhere, pitched roof windows are the usual choice for pitched roofs over bedrooms, stairs and bathrooms.
Machynlleth is around 38 km from Newtown, and we survey and fit throughout that part of Powys, including the SY20 district.

Planning, building control and Machynlleth
In Wales a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development if it stands no more than 15 cm proud of the roof, except on protected land such as conservation areas and National Parks, where permission is needed. A side-facing rooflight within 10.5 m of the boundary must be obscure-glazed, and non-opening unless the opening part is more than 1.7 m above the floor.
Welsh Building Regulations expect new or replacement rooflights to reach 2.2 W/m²K and roof windows 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B rating. Wales also has its own overheating rules (Part O) for new homes, in force since November 2022.
Our planning guide covers each nation in more detail.

Pitched roof windows in Machynlleth: questions
Can a roof window be fitted from inside?
In most cases, yes — only the tiles around the opening are lifted, and much of the work is done from inside the loft.
Can you replace an old roof window?
Yes — replacement into the same opening is usually quicker than a new install, often a few hours per window.
Will it need building regulations approval?
Fitting a new roof window usually involves cutting rafters and changing the thermal envelope, so building control approval (or, in England and Wales, a competent-person route) is normally needed. We tell you which applies.
Can you work alongside my builder in Machynlleth?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
Do you fit pitched roof windows in Machynlleth?
Yes. We survey and fit pitched roof windows in Machynlleth and across Powys. Send your postcode and we will offer a survey date when we reply.
