Skylight installation for Plymouth: the essentials
Skylight installation in Plymouth means survey, supply and fit — new openings, extensions and fit-only work. We cover the PL1 district and the rest of Devon, with a survey before any price is fixed.
Many South West towns mix Georgian and Victorian terraces with modern estates, so the right product differs street by street. Skylight installation suits new extensions, new openings and fit-only jobs.
We cover all of Plymouth and the PL1 district, and nearby Plymstock and Paignton.

Do you need permission in Plymouth?
English householder permitted development (Class C) normally covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof plane and stay below the highest part of the roof. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
Building Regulations Approved Document L sets a limiting U-value of 2.2 W/m²K for new or replacement rooflights in existing homes, measured in the horizontal plane; roof windows need 1.4 W/m²K or a Band B energy rating. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.

Common questions
Do I need a structural engineer?
For new openings that cut joists or rafters, a structural check is sensible and building control may ask for calculations.
Who handles building control?
We tell you which route applies — building control approval, a building warrant in Scotland, or in England and Wales self-certification by a registered competent person — and supply the product data.
How long does installation take?
Fitting into a prepared upstand takes about a day. A new opening in an existing roof, including making good, often takes two to three days.
Can you work alongside my builder in Plymouth?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
Will I need planning permission in Plymouth?
Most rooflights on English houses do not need planning permission, provided they keep within 150 mm of the roof surface and below the ridge line.
