How we approach sliding rooflights in March
For March homes and buildings we offer sliding rooflights: box rooflights whose glass lid slides back for walk-out roof access. We measure first, specify to the opening and confirm any planning or building-control points before quoting.
Many homes in the East have low-pitched roofs on later extensions, which are better served by flat rooflights than pitched roof windows. Sliding rooflights suit walk-out access where a hatch would feel cramped.
We work across Cambridgeshire, including March, and in neighbouring towns such as Wisbech and Ely. Access, parking and how the glass reaches the roof are all checked at the survey.
Specification options
- Electric drive with safety edge
- Anthracite, black or RAL frames
- Integrated balustrade on some ranges
- Rain sensor
- Box (glazed sides) or flat sliding lid
- Replaces a dormer or stair enclosure on some roofs
- Lockable from inside
What to check first
- The stair opening and headroom must meet Building Regulations
- Weight and point loads need a structural check
Do you need permission in March?
In England a rooflight on a house is usually permitted development under Class C if it projects no more than 150 mm beyond the roof slope and sits no higher than the ridge. Listed buildings need listed building consent, flats have no householder permitted development rights, and an Article 4 direction can remove the rights in some conservation areas.
For English homes the energy rules ask for rooflights of 2.2 W/m²K or better and roof windows of 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B); most modern double glazed units meet both. In an extension, glazing including rooflights is normally limited to 25% of the new floor area plus any windows or doors the extension covers, unless a whole-house calculation shows otherwise.
Read the planning permission guide before you commit to a design.

Sliding rooflights in March: questions
What if it is raining?
Fitted with a rain sensor, an electric unit closes automatically. Most also have a manual override for power cuts.
Is it lockable?
Yes. Units lock from inside and the drive holds the lid closed.
Is a sliding rooflight better than an access hatch?
For daily use, usually yes — you walk out under open sky instead of climbing through a hinged hatch. A hatch costs less and suits occasional access.
How do I book a survey in March?
Send your postcode and, if you can, a photo of the roof and the room. We offer a survey date when we reply.
Can you work alongside my builder in March?
Yes. On new extensions we fit once the opening and upstand are ready and coordinate dates with your builder.
